An impossible rescue

Last time... in the Covenant Marrow! In a valley where debts outlive the people who owe them, three unlikely companions met in Brackenfold: R6B, a robot fueled by alcohol; Cauldron, an elderly spellcaster in a wheelchair; and Rook, a quiet man keeping his reasons to himself. Their job: rescue the Unbinder, a woman condemned for breaking the debts of the poor. And if she could not be saved... recover her oath-stone.

The plan

Their allies would create a distraction. The rest was up to them. While Rook and Cauldron slept, R6B drank his way through a long rest and scouted the execution ground. Morning brought Cauldron's tai chi, a hurried reunion, and quiet conversations with the gathering crowd. Then came the signal.

The broken stone

Rook's magical axes cut the hanging rope. Beneath the gallows, R6B balanced above Cauldron's wheelchair, ready to catch her. They stopped the hanging... but not the execution. The Unbinder had already been poisoned. She died, and the fall shattered her stone. Its mysterious essence surged into R6B, marking his metal body with unfamiliar glyphs.

A day early

Cauldron teleported them out of the chaos to the bridge near the Grey Fen. Their waiting orc ferryman had expected fugitives... just not a day early. Still reeling from the strange power, R6B faltered at the doorway. Then they boarded and set off along the Greywash.

The price of freedom

At a riverside village, supplies and more alcohol became an investigation. Could the Unbinder's gift still work? A fisherman offered the answer. R6B reached for the power inside him. Magical chains broke, the fisherman's debt vanished... and those chains fastened themselves to the robot. The grateful villagers offered fish and a feast. The true price remained unknown.

River ambush

Back aboard, R6B stripped off his gear so his companions could inspect the glowing glyphs. The bandits chose that moment to attack. Arrows turned the unarmored robot into a pincushion. Cauldron answered with fire, while Rook and R6B cut through a trapping net. Battered, but free, they escaped downriver.

The fisherman’s pull

That night, freedom proved more complicated. Visions of the fisherman's hut pulled R6B toward the shore. He wanted to return. He could barely stop himself. Rook caught him trying to leave, and at the robot's own request, bound him to a tree until morning.

Sharing the burden

At the Salt Cathedral Bridge and Locks, an inspector demanded their names. R6B responded by pushing him into the water. The companions hurried to their chapel rendezvous. There, a religious guide explained the burden R6B carried, and led R6B into a salt-crusted doorway. A ritual shared the burden among the guide, Rook, and Cauldron.

A stranger’s offer

Then a ragged hermit appeared in the shadows. He offered to take their power... and grant their desires. Suspicious of his motives, they promised only to consider it. Exhausted, they rested. R6B borrowed the chapel wine. His keg, unfortunately, was still on the ferry.

The Archive

At ten that night, the guards arrived. Leading them was a familiar, recently submerged dock inspector, who also served as the Archive warden. But this arrest concerned Brackenfold, the execution, and the missing stone. R6B feigned a power failure. Six guards struggled to carry him, while another pushed Cauldron in his wheelchair, all the way to the Lockward Archive. Rook was questioned first. Then Cauldron. Finally, the robot awoke... speaking another language, as though something inside him had broken. Was this another trick? Or was something else beginning to speak?
